Monday Book Review: ENTWINED by Cherie Colyer #new #YA

Entwined, by Cherie Colyer
(Embrace series, book three)
Published by Omnific Publishing, April 2015

About the Book:
Only a few months after embracing her magical powers, defeating a dark witch, and banishing a faerie prince back to his realm, sixteen-year-old Madison Riley is back in book three of the Embrace series—and doing the bidding of a demon. She has no choice but to do so if she wants him to honor the deal they made to save the life of someone she loves. Twenty years of service to a creature of hell is a big price, but one she’s willing to pay. And it sure beats the alternative: selling her soul.

But life gets complicated when you’re the beck-and-call witch of a crossroad demon. Caden, the demon she serves, wants to become master of Death Himself, and with Madison at his side he has the means to do it.

It’s up to Madison and her coven to foil his plans, but Caden’s intentions aren't entirely evil—and the kisses he seals his deals with aren’t too bad either. As Caden's motives test Madison’s trust, his shameful flirting tries her boyfriend Isaac’s patience. But being caught between two supernatural hotties is perhaps the least of her concerns when the coven’s interference in Caden’s plot might just cost Madison her life and unleash hell on earth.

MY TAKE:

Cherie Colyer's Embrace series combines witchcraft, self-discovery and first love in a magical way that draws readers into her world and makes them believe. This is the third book in the series, and the story and characters just keep getting better.

In the second book of the series, Hold Tight, our narrator Madison makes a deal with a crossroads demon to save her little brother. When you make a deal with a demon or a devil, they usually claim your soul, but Cade made an exception for her, only claiming her servitude for a set number of years.

Entwined begins with one of the many small acts Madison must perform as part and parcel to that deal with the hot demon Cade.... A deal that her boyfriend Isaac doesn't like in the least. And every deal with a demon needs to be sealed with a kiss. Kisses that Madison doesn't necessarily dislike...except that Madison has a boyfriend whom she's really really attached to.

The love triangle works in this book, and gets even more complicated by the addition of the stalker fae/love interest from the second book still haunting Madison's dreams. I thought I knew which boy she should choose, but after this story, Caden is growing on me. I'm already looking forward to the next book! (write faster, Cherie!)

Series versus Standalone:

Entwined is the third book in Colyer's series, yet it is a self-contained story with fully developed characters, plot points, and story arc that begins and ends within these pages. Reading the first two books will give the reader a greater depth of understanding and insight, but you could pick this book up and read it on its own. I love all 3 books so recommend starting at the beginning of the series and scarfing them all down. However, I totally appreciate that this is a complete and satisfying story in and of itself, and for this I applaud Colyer and love her books. Yes, reading the entire series will make each book a much richer reading experience, but you are not left dangling at the end.

There is a growing trend in series books to leave everything dangling at the end of each book, making the reader Need to buy book two to get any resolution whatsoever. I personally hate this trend and hate feeling manipulated in this way. I bought a book, I invested my time in it, I need a resolution. It's perfectly legitimate to leave big questions unanswered or have ongoing mysteries or love triangles, but I feel very strongly that each book in a series should have its own story arc and ending, and give the reader some measure of satisfaction for their time and money.

When I first discovered Charlaine Harris's awesome Sookie Stackhouse series, the first book I picked up was not book one but rather Living Dead in Dallas, which was the second book. Each of her books - in a 13 book series - has its own story arc. Yes, you have a better understanding of individual characters if you start at the beginning, but even a fan who reads them all deserves a sense of closure at the end of each novel. If that first read had left me hanging, I don't think I would have continued reading the others, or gotten so drawn into the world she created.

In my reading for reviews, I've come across a lot of books lately that just end. No resolution, no closure, no sense of HEA. And it doesn't entice me to automatically buy the second book. It enrages me. It leaves me feel that I've wasted time better spent reading something else. And I refuse to read more from that author. It's fine to leave room for a sequel, or a series, but give the reader a sense that her time was worth the effort. Please.

NEW RELEASE: ENTWINED, by Cherie Colyer #YA #paranormal #amreading

ENTWINED
an Embrace Series Novel by Cherie Colyer
I'm so very very excited to read this new book in Cherie Colyer's EMBRACE series! I read and reviewed the first two and have been waiting for a third for a while now (feels like forever sometimes, but not as long as the next George RR Martin novel, lol!)

And I love the new cover!! At the end of the second book I was definitely "Team Isaac" (as they say) But love the book description, and think it sounds like Madison might be falling a little for the bad boy demon... Will definitely be reading this very soon and posting a review!

Cherie has a wonderful YA series which includes EMBRACE and HOLD TIGHT, both of which I loved and reviewed (read EMBRACE review here for February's Cephalopod Coffee House) (read HOLD TIGHT review here). Both would be great poolside reads... and I'm hoping there will be another book in this series for next summer!

Cherie also has a great paranormal YA out from my other publisher, The Wild Rose Press. Challenging Destiny is also a fast, fun read - perfect for a day at the beach! (Read that review HERE)

BOOK REVIEW: CHALLENGING DESTINY by Cherie Colyer

Challenging Destiny, by Cherie Colyer
Published by The Wild Rose Press, March 2014 on Kindle

About the Book (from Goodreads):

Logan Ragsdale and his younger sister, Ariana, have been marked, chosen to be unwilling participants in a war between angels and demons.

Logan can sense something's not quite right. Like an unexpected chill on a summer's day, he can feel the unseen closing in. He's had these feelings before and, each time, someone close to him died. He's afraid this time it might just be Ariana.

Logan's fears are soon confirmed when he discovers their new friends aren't human, but rather representatives from Heaven and Hell sent to Earth to ensure he and Ariana accept their roles in an ancient prophecy. Demons want Logan to open the gates of Hell. Ariana has the power to stop them, but if she chooses to side with Heaven to spare the lives of thousands of innocent people, she'll damn her brother for eternity.

Together, they must derail the biblical event if they hope to save themselves and the future of mankind...but what price are they willing to pay to keep the other safe?

MY TAKE:

This is the third paranormal YA I've read from this author, and I'll admit to enjoying her writing style. The dialogue is crisp, the snark is enjoyable and the situations keep me turning pages well into the night. I loved and reviewed her first two books, EMBRACE and HOLD TIGHT (click links to read my reviews.) Her first two books are from Omnific Publishing, and I jumped at the chance to read and review her latest book from The Wild Rose Press, CHALLENGING DESTINY.

Cherie Colyer has done it again, hitting another 5-star homerun with a new YA supernatural series. At least, I hope it's a series, because I'm pretty sure heaven and hell aren't finished with the Ragsdale siblings.

The story is told in alternating POVs between Ariana Ragsdale and her big brother Logan. The two pretend to be normal high school students, struggling with geometry, finding dates for the dance and cutting classes, but they know there is something different about themselves. They have odd birthmarks and a strange connection to each other, as well as the odd ability to influence the minds of others. On their own since their last foster parents met tragic deaths, Logan can always tell when death is stalking their loved ones... and suddenly he's hearing voices again and knows someone is going to die.

Good versus evil, blessed versus the fallen... all Logan and Ariana want is to escape with their lives. I should admit here that I'm a big fan of the television show, Supernatural, and the struggles of the Ragsdale siblings reminded me a little of the Winchester brothers. But in a good way, complete with Sam and Dean's usual side of snark and dash of sass. The Ragsdales aren't Hunters like the Winchesters - just teens marked as pawns in a war they want no part of.

Ms. Colyer shows her prowess once again, with this well-written paranormal tale that's sure to engage and delight. If you like angels versus demon tales (or you're a fan of Sam and Dean) check out this new take on the war between Heaven and Hell. You won't be disappointed.

(From the author's website:)
I write young adult and middle grade novels. I love finding new stories that keep me up late reading. While my favorite genre is fantasy, if the book is beautifully written with characters that come alive I’m all over it.

BOOK REVIEW: HOLD TIGHT by Cherie Colyer

Hold Tight, by Cherie Colyer
Book 2 of the Embrace series
Published by Omnific Publishing, August 2013

About the Book:
What’s one little spell?
When you’re new to magic, one spell can be the difference between getting what you want...and ruining the lives of everyone you love.
Sixteen-year-old Madison has just embraced her magical powers. The trick now is learning how to control them. She and her boyfriend -and fellow witch- can’t even enjoy a simple kiss without getting shocked when their powers collide. Instead of mastering her new skills, though, Madison is stuck watching her kid brother and doing chores.
But being a witch does have its benefits. With a simple spell, Madison instantly conjures the help she needs around the house. Or so she thinks. Her idea of “help” invites trouble of its own as a pair of dangerous yet enticing beings enter her life. When a classmate disappears soon afterwards, Madison discovers she's the next victim of a threat she's powerless to resist...and there’s nothing it won’t kill to make her surrender.
Caught in the crossfire between two dashing but deadly creatures, Madison must figure out which one to trust and how to rid her world of the other—before one of them destroys her and everyone she cares about.
MY TAKE:

I sooo loved the first book in this series... and while I was excited to read the second book, I worried it might not live up to the first. You know how that goes. Sophomore slump and all. But luckily, I had nothing to fear.

HOLD TIGHT does not disappoint. Cherie Colyer does a wonderful job in Book 2 of this series, introducing new characters and keeping both the action and tension running full steam ahead. I love this author's writing style, and her exclusive use of Madison's first person POV. Book 2 stays YA while ratcheting up the stakes in her life and the lives of those she cares for.

The book begins about a month after the end of the first book, EMBRACE. Madison has fully accepted her witchy powers, but still has problems kissing her boyfriend, Isaac. Like a "built-in parental control," their liplocks always end with powers colliding and electric shocks (not the good kind, either.)

The catalyst for this next adventure is Madison's curiosity, when she attempts to use a summoning spell to get a fairy to help with her housework and chores. Big mistake. The fae don't give favors for free, especially when one of the fairies you summon has a gripe with the boy you love.

Now Madison has to figure out how to send the Fae Prince of the Winter Court back to his world before he and Isaac battle over her. Throw in a crossroad demon and a Fae Princess of the Summer Court and Madison has enough trouble to keep her busy for the rest of junior year.

It comes to a head when her brother Chase in injured and only magic can save him...but choosing which magic will change Madison's life forever.

If you haven't read the first book in this series, I would recommend reading that first. And then grab this one in quick succession. The author is still at work on Book 3 - and I'm totally looking forward to reading and reviewing that one as well!
