Friday Feature: Finding Inspiration in the Old West, with Author Ilona Fridle

I want to thank Katie for hosting me on her blog today.

My inspiration for That Monroe Girl came from my love of westerns. I grew up in Southern California and most of our family vacations were in the western states. We visited cities and small towns alike. Many of the small towns looked like sets for the movie and TV I loved. Tombstone impressed me with the way they preserved the character of the place. The Tombstone Epitaph newspaper was still in business and I have a copy I bought when I was there. When I set to write the book, I sent away for a couple of historic copies of the newspaper from the 1880s, so I could see what news, businesses, and concerns the people had then. I tried to paint an accurate picture of the town and its citizens.

With the setting in 1883, Tombstone was a Phoenix rising from the ashes of a fire the year before that took out much of the business area. I'm sure the buildings had the look of a brand new town. I set it a few years after the Earps and Clantons shoot-out. That seems to be the only thing Tombstone was known for, but it was a thriving community and the seat of Cochise County. It's still a popular stop for vacationers and history buffs. I recommend it for all western lovers.

About the Book:

Cat Monroe arrives in Tombstone, Arizona searching for her father and brothers, who left Virginia for the West right after the Civil War. With the help of newspaper reporter Jake Spencer, she finds her family and a whole peck of trouble. She's falling for the newspaperman, but she discovers his family and hers are feuding over water rights. When her father finally accepts that she is his daughter, he wants to marry her off to a rich neighbor who has a dark past.

For the excerpt, since Valentine's Day is just passed, I give you The First Kiss.

The band started playing a polka, and he rose, bowing to Cat. “Before anyone else interrupts, may I have this dance?”
Cat laughed and reached for him. “Delighted to!”
They whirled onto the floor, and soon they were flying to the lively beat. The room seemed to blur as he swung her around. When at last the music ceased, they were breathless and hanging onto each other.
Cat opened her fan. “My, I’m overheated now.”
Jake held out his arm. “Want to step outside for a bit?” She slipped her hand through the crook of his elbow, and they went out the side door and to the back of the building. Strains of “Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes” came floating into the night. The full Arizona moon made her creamy skin glow like alabaster. They did an impromptu slow waltz in the night air with some snorts and whinnying from the waiting horses. “Cat, you are so beautiful tonight.”
She stopped, still in his arms, and raised her eyes to his face. He could feel her trembling beneath his touch, as she said, “I’m beginning to feel more than friendship for you. Am I too bold to tell you this?”
Every nerve in his body came alert. A wave of tenderness and lust washed over him. “My dear sweet Miss Monroe, you don’t know what joy it is to hear that confession.” They stared transfixed at each other. Jake lightly caressed her cheek and moved his fingers to trace her neck to her shoulder. She seemed to soften as he hardened. Leaning down, his lips brushed hers lightly, and a small moan escaped her throat. His mouth sealed hers then, and he ran his tongue over her lips until she opened them and met him with a full kiss. Lord, she tasted sweet! He wanted her. Badly.
She pulled back and swallowed a couple of times. “Oh, Jake, that wasshe seemed to be searching for the right word”breathtaking.” She embraced him, fitting her body with his. “Let's do that again.”

Writing Wednesday: Guest Blogging with Anna Durand

Today I'm visiting romance author Anna Durand on her blog SPUNK AND HUNKS, talking about my latest release, CRAZY ABOUT YOU, and how so much of it is based on reality.

Not all of it. The dead body? I totally made that up.

The Atlantic garbage gyre? Yeah, that's real. And that's pretty scary.

Hop over and say hi - here's the link:

And if you haven't checked out CRAZY ABOUT YOU, grab a copy today!

Writing Wednesday: Be My Guest

Summer is over and Back-to-School time is upon us. Are you ready? I am!

Okay, that's not really me, but it is my kids. I may be a little old to be going back to school myself, but I'm using this quintessential time of reorganization to get my blogging back on track. I mean, what happened to my book review this week, right? I swear I scheduled it and yet when I checked in, it wasn't there. C'mon, Katie. Get it together.

With my new day job and my renewed commitment to my writing (two more books on the horizon this year, one already scheduled for January 2016 release) I may need a little help with the blogging. Which is why I'm opening my blog up to guests for the rest of the year. Want a guest spot to chat with new readers about your latest book or your thoughts on writing? C'mon over for a visit. I'll bring the coffee and M&Ms, you bring the witty reparte and insights.

If you'd like to take me up on this offer, email me at katie (dot) osullivan (at) yahoo.com

I'm reserving Fridays to feature other authors, as well as the occasional Wednesday. Mondays will still be for book reviews - I've got four lined up from my weekend reading, as well as the post that somehow didn't get published this week while I was away. Like I say, need to get organized!

Guest Blogging at Marilyn Almodovar's blog today!

As you can see, the lifeguard chair here at Read, Write, Repeat is empty today! I'm guest blogging at YA author Marilyn Almodovar's place, "Writing on the Sunny Side of the Street."

I'm discussing mermaids and world building, and how you can't use some common words and phrases when the speaker doesn't have a leg to stand on - see there's one right there!

Think about it - mermaids don't run away from danger, because they don't "run." The things you have to think about when your characters have fins instead of feet...

Come on over and see what else I'm saying...

Guest blogging at Sydney St. Claire's place!

Today I'm talking about writing over at Sydney St. Claire's blog - and how I utterly failed at one of the most cliched of author endeavors: writing in a coffee shop. How did I fail? Come visit to find out at Sydney St. Claire's Wordpress Blog

Keep Splashing Into Summer... Visiting The Writing Nut Today

The Splash Into Summer tour continues today in two more fun spots:

I'm over at THE WRITING NUT where I'm Nutschell's guest on her Wednesday Workspace feature.

Want to see what my mess desk looks like? The things I need to write? My puppy when she could still fit UNDER my desk (instead of being the same size as the desk!) Stop by and say hi!

I'm also visiting with author Cindy Young Turner, and answering her questions about my writing and inspirations. And whether I like coffee or tea (Tea! As if!) Stop by and make Cindy feel loved!

* * *

And big thanks to everyone who showed up to the Twitter party - and then moved with us to Facebook when Twitter crapped out. Tech rumour has it that our party wouldn't work because The Voice uses Twitter for live feedback on the show. Oh well - we had a BLAST on Facebook! Congrats to all the winners - I will get my share of the prizes in the mail today!

Guest Author Lindsey Loucks and THE GRAVE WINNER

Today I'm excited to have author Lindsey Loucks on my blog, answering questions and talking about her new YA book, THE GRAVE WINNER.

And in a neat little twist, I'm over at her blog today talking about SON OF A MERMAID! Both of our novels were released last week from Crescent Moon Press.

Both of our books are YA, and both involve magick. In both her book and mine, the main characters find out secrets that have been hidden from them. -secrets that change their lives forever. AND... I totally enjoyed reading her book! I'll be posting my review soon, but trust me. Good book with a unique concept and characters.

Tomorrow night, we'll both be hosting a BIG TWITTER PARTY with tons of COOL PRIZES!!! Necklaces, swag, ebooks and $100 gift card! Look for the hashtag #MAGICKED. Authors Lynn Rush, Kary Rader, and Maer Wilson are also hosting - it should be a fast and furious night! Hope to see you there!

Okay, on to the interview....
Hi, Lindsey! Give us a brief bio and tell us what kind of books you like to read and write.

Hello, Katie! I work as a K-12 librarian, and when I’m not talking about books, I’m reading or writing them. I love to read all kinds of books, but especially those that are dark, atmospheric, and with a touch of romance. Coincidentally, those are the same kind of stories I like to write!

What's your favorite part of being an author?

So far, my favorite part was telling my mom last Mother’s Day that I had just signed a publishing contract. I could hear her smile over the phone!

What’s your approach to writing? Do you plot or go with the flow?

Maybe a little bit of both. I usually have a vague idea where I’m going, but I like to let the characters take the reins and lead me in directions I never knew existed. Sometimes they lead me over rugged terrain, but it’s always a lot of fun!

Besides being an awesome author, if you could have one superpower, what would you choose?

My superpower would be to make people’s daydreams come true. *rubs hands together and laughs maniacally* That would be very interesting!

Tell us about your new release, THE GRAVE WINNER

I’d love to! Here’s the blurb:
Leigh Baxton is terrified her mom will come back from the dead -- just like the prom queen did.

While the town goes beehive over the news, Leigh bikes to the local cemetery and buries some of her mom’s things in her grave to keep her there. When the hot and mysterious caretaker warns her not to give gifts to the dead, Leigh cranks up her punk music and keeps digging.

She should have listened.

Two dead sorceresses evicted the prom queen from her grave to bury someone who offered certain gifts. Bury them alive, that is, then resurrect them to create a trio of undead powerful enough to free the darkest sorceress ever from her prison inside the earth.

With help from the caretaker and the dead prom queen, Leigh must find out what’s so special about the gifts she gave, and why the sorceresses are stalking her and her little sister. If she doesn’t, she’ll either lose another loved one or have to give the ultimate gift to the dead – herself.

Okay, if you’re casting the movie of your book, who would play the main characters?

Tough question. Taylor Momsen might work for Leigh, but I’d have to actually talk to her to see if she could pull it off. Leigh’s dad would have to be Aaron Eckhart. As far as the rest of the characters, I haven’t found anyone yet.

Where can readers find your books and where can you be found on the web?

The Grave Winner will be available as an ebook and paperback from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Kobo.

I’m usually frolicking all over the internet, but mostly at these places:

Thank you so much, Katie, for having me!

Thanks for stopping by, Lindsey! And thanks for having me over to chat on your blog today, too! Let's do this again sometime!

Does anyone have any questions for Lindsey? And don't forget - TWITTER PARTY TOMORROW - 8-10 p.m.EST, hashtag #MAGICKED

Guest Blogging and Today's Interview... Are Mermaids Real?

Day Two of my Splash Into Summer tour, and I'm already wishing I'd hired someone to manage all the details for me, lol!

Today I'm guest blogging at Constance Phillips spot. She's the author of the paranormal romance FAIRYPROOF, and the historical paranormal romance about Harry Houdini, RESURRECTING HARRY. We're discussing whether mermaids might actually exist... what do you think? Come read my arguments and tell us your own thoughts!

I'm also being interviewed by Wendy Russo on her blog - Wendy is the author of that great new YA novel JANUARY BLACK. (If you haven't read it yet, you really should! And she's got some cool contests of her own going on right now, so be sure to stick around and check out her website!)

Wendy asks great questions, which evolved organically over the course of a long email conversation. It was a cool way to be interviewed - unique, like her novel!

And don't forget the Rafflecopter giveaway is now open - enter to win your own copy of SON OF A MERMAID and your own mermaid necklace!

AND AND AND... if you're already sold on buying SON OF A MERMAID... why wait? Order today at Amazon in paperback or for your Kindle!

Planning a Blog Tour and You Are Invited!

My fabulous daughter created this fabulous badge for my upcoming new release and blog tour - I'm so excited about the font she found, and how well it goes with the book and the whole "splash" theme! So cool, right?! I am so lucky to have family who can create such wonderful things!

Speaking of family, I've got lots of my fellow authors at Crescent Moon Press all signed up to host me on their blogs and pimp me out on their Facebook pages, and will be posting a full list soon of where and when and what I will be doing on this blog tour - as well as prizes that I'll be giving away. And yes, I will be attempting to finally master the Rafflecopter genie.

Guest Author: Constance Phillips and RESURRECTING HARRY

The Skills Needed to Escape Death – Resurrecting Harry

Thank you, Katie, for having me on your blog today!

The core idea behind Resurrecting Harry is that an escape artist is able to achieve the greatest escape ever – the chains of death.   Besides having the help of a supernatural being, I knew the person to achieve that feat would have to be a skilled, dedicated, and driven. It didn’t take me long to settle on Harry Houdini.

Just look at this interesting tidbit I found on an internet article about Houdini.

In order to achieve his death-defying stunts Houdini had to train himself to be both physically and mentally fit. He had an over-sized bath tub fitted into his house so that he could practice holding his breath (he could hold his breath for three minutes). He trained himself to be ambidextrous, making his left hand as able as his right. Determined to reach the peak of his profession, Houdini would practice card tricks over and over again without looking. As he sat down to talk with friends he would repeatedly untie knots with his feet. (10 Fascinating Facts About Houdini)

In the book, I had to give Harry’s physical ability to endure some time on the page, and compare it to Erich’s.  In one passage in particular, Harry’s memories and skills take over Erich’s new body.

Harry’s memories, his very soul, pulsed inside with each beat of Erich’s heart. Was it even possible for him to use those memories to accomplish the skills Harry had worked tirelessly to learn? There was much more to picking a lock or escaping shackles or a straight jacket than the mental knowhow. In this moment, nothing seemed more important than proving those skills were not as dead as his previous body.

Erich may not spend hours in a tub working on holding his breath or pass the time untying knots with his feet, but Harry’s soul, that pulses within him, carries Harry’s memories, and they do effect his actions.

For better or for worse…

About Resurrecting Harry

Can the greatest escape artist ever known break the grim reaper's chains to save the only woman he's ever loved?

In order to save Bess from self-destruction, Harry Houdini puts his afterlife on the line by entering a wager with purgatory's keeper. He gives Harry a younger face and body, and a new name: ErichWelch.

Bess clings to his promise to deliver a coded message from beyond the grave, determined to provide the bridge for him to cross, even if that means befriending her husband's sworn enemy. Erich needs to help Bess over her loss and put her on the road to healing, but will any good come from Resurrecting Harry?

New Year's Resolution #2: Guest Posts!

"G" is for Guests!

I love having guests visit my blog - and I love doing cover reveals for other authors and helping to spread the word about new releases. For one, it helps me feel more connected to the writing world at large, because let's face it, writers spend most of the work day sitting alone with a computer screen staring back at them...sometimes with words on it, sometimes with silly videos of talking unicorns, but alone nonetheless.

Guests - even virtual ones - make the day go by so much faster. And you don't have to dust when blog guests visit - big bonus!

So for 2013, one of my resolutions is to HOST MORE BLOG GUESTS.

My plan is to reserve TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS for GUESTS. All year long. Except maybe in April when the AtoZ Challenge makes everything, well, challenging. But for the rest of 2013, I'm available.

Which means - this is your invitation! Send me an email and let's set up a playdate. Or send me your info and cover and I'd be happy to post it to spread the word about your book. Let's have a virtual cup of coffee and talk about writing and books and all kinds of stuff - as long as you don't notice the dust or that pile of unfolded laundry in the corner. And don't mind the big drooly Puppy. She's friendly. And she stopped eating books. (Mostly.)
If you have a new release coming out sometime this year, add me as a stop on your virtual tour! The more the merrier, right? Right! (And I still won't have to dust!)

Some of my fellow Crescent Moon Press authors have already taken me up on this offer, and are signed up in the coming weeks to visit and let me interview them - so excited to share their new books with everyone!

And you? Would you like to be my guest?

Holiday Guest Blogging and Prizes!

My chair is empty today, as I've traveled over to Kate Evangelista's blog to talk about all things Christmas! Well, maybe not all things, but you know what I mean ;-)

Kate is a fellow Crescent Moon Press author, whose YA novel TASTE was one of the reasons I queried CMP in the first place!

Kate has been celebrating the Holiday Season all month with a series of guests and a ton of prizes and giveaways. If you haven't been over to her blog to check it out yet... you're missing out! GO! NOW!

Come visit me over there today at www.kateevangelista.com and be sure to leave a comment! I'm talking about my most memorable Christmas - and invite you to share a Christmas memory or two. There are 24 of us authors participating, and each of us is giving away some great stuff.

I'm giving away a paperback copy of my first novel, UNFOLDING THE SHADOWS, because it JUST CAME OUT IN PAPERBACK IN NOVEMBER! *yea*
