Cephalopod Coffeehouse BOOK REVIEW: SHIFT HAPPENS, by J.C. McKenzie

Once again, it's the last Friday of the month, time for the Cephalopod Coffeehouse (what other kind would a mermaid writer participate in?) This is a monthly round-up of the best books participants have read in the last month and want to recommend to others.

I've posted a lot of book reviews this month - some of it is a cheating kind of thing, as the reviews are for books I read on vacation in May! Some were ARCs and not yet available to the public and others I just didn't get to putting on the blog until recently, as they were sitting there on my iPad and oh yeah, I forgot about them!

The book I'm going to review and recommend, however, I did read in July. In two days, despite a hectic schedule, and grabbing reading time in the parking lots of various activities the kids were involved with (you know, tennis lessons, drama rehearsals, etc., etc.) The copy I read was an ARC from the author, but the book released this month and...

I LOVED IT. Love the voice, love the action, love the sexual tension between the main characters. LOVED. Can't wait for the release of book two!

About the Book (from Amazon):
Andrea McNeilly's job as a government agent is not asking questions, but then a routine assignment turns into a botched assassination of a Master Vampire's human servant. Answers become a priority. Her search to discover the truth is riddled with obstacles, the largest being an oversized Werewolf who resembles a Norse god. Andy can't afford the distraction he offers, because if she fails, she faces eternal enslavement.

Wick's job is to monitor Andy, but he prefers more intimate activities, none of them G-Rated. His choices, however, are often not his own. His ability to help Andy is limited by his bond to the Master Vampire.

Facing many trials and challenges along her path to redemption, Andy learns the value of her freedom might be set too high.
MY TAKE:

The book starts out fast and quickly goes on from there, dragging us headlong into a future world where shifters, weres, vampires and all sorts of paranormals are officially "out" and people have learned to deal with it. Sort of. Andy McNeilly works for the government agency that polices the "supes" and takes out the baddies before things get ugly.

Things get ugly for Andy in the very first chapter.

As a shape shifter with more than one form, she is not the "normal" supe. She's never met another who can do what she does, and knows that different isn't good. She's a loner both by choice and by necessity. When her assignment goes bad and she's captured by a pack of werewolves, she's confronted by an overwhelming urge to join with the pack's alpha, Wick - despite having vowed to never trust another man ever again. Emotional conflict adds to the action and suspense, raising the stakes on everything.

The vampires aren't sparkly, but rather pure evil in Armani suits. The werewolves come in all stripes of temperament, and most shifters are defined by their chosen animals. As we go through the book with Andy (it's written in the kind of snarky first person voice I love), we experience life as a shifter and she throws in her abilities for the reader so it all feels "normal." She also discovers a few new abilities, and we're right there with her, in front row seats.

The author develops Wick's character slowly until the reader practically screams at Andy to just give in, trust him to be a good guy and do it already! Or wait, maybe that was just me screaming. Oops.

The unresolved sexual tension is palpable and keeps you turning pages at incredible speed. I loved the scenes between these two characters, and my heart went out to Andy in her conflicted desires and PTSD from her past. There was some of that past that I would've liked to see more clearly illustrated and defined, as in the conflict that sent her into the wilderness for years of recovery. But I'm hoping the author is saving more revelations for book two which is already under contract.

In short, if you enjoy paranormal with a giant side of snark, you need to grab this book and stuff it in your summer beach bag. A great read, a fun ride, and a truly enjoyable debut novel.

Cephalopod Coffehouse Blog Hop: THE SEER'S LOVER by Kat de Falla

Happy April, and welcome to the monthly meeting of the Cephalopod Book Club... the links to the rest of the stops are at the bottom of this post. This blog hop "meets" on the last Friday of each month to share books we've discovered and enjoyed.

Okay, so I've been reading and reviewing a lot in the last month or so, which you can interpret as procrastination if you must, but I prefer to think of it as "replenishing the well." I read mostly paranormal YA and contemporary romance, which makes sense since those are the genres I also write. But once in a while I like to step out of my comfort zone to see what else is going on in fiction...

This month, I read some truly wonderful YA paranormals (come back Monday for a review of the YA dystopian OMNI that's part of a blog tour) and a great ARC for a romance anthology being released next week (ONE LUCKY NIGHT - check back May 8 for more details about the release and May 12 for my review!)

I also dipped a toe into some scarier adult stuff - not my usual genre at all, but intriguing enough that I thought I'd share with the book club blog hoppers...

The Seer's Lover by Kat De Falla
Published February 2014 by The Wild Rose Press

About the Book:
For years, Calise Rowe has been able to sense unusual energy from people, making her believe she is different. Pulled into an ancient war raging for centuries between demon hunters and seers, she's about to find out she's right.
Her search for the truth leads her to Lucas Rojas, a seer of angels and demons who walk the earth shrouded from normal human eyes. He's hidden his gift for years and refuses to endanger Calise by sharing it with her.
In the sultry Costa Rican Jungles, their worlds collide. As their passion and desire ignite, so does the ancient war between demons and seers. Will their combined efforts be enough to save themselves and the entire human world, or will their new found love be their downfall?
MY TAKE:

Okay, first of all, take a look at that mondo-creepy cover! The red eyes.... Yikes! It makes me think totally spooky tropical paradise, jungle creatures creeping around after dark, and all kinds of sharp-taloned scary creatures... including demons and ex-lovers.

This is an adult paranormal with romance, an angels versus demons tale with multiple storylines and multiple POV voices. Told in third person with alternating voices, each chapter tells you where you are, ranging from Wisconsin to Costa Rica to Kansas to Russia - all over the map, really. Some of the narrators are good, some are demons, some are wavering in between... but all have their own agendas.

Even though I've read plenty of YA angel stories, this was my first foray into an adult version. Kat deFalla takes the reader on a break-neck journey into her world of angels, demons and "seers," those who can see the paranormal creatures who walk among us for what they truly are. The continuous action kept me reading, keeping me guessing as to what would happen next.

If you enjoy creepy paranormal thrillers, give this book a try. It's the first in a planned series, so if you like it, there will be more to come! But I totally recommend leaving the lights on while reading this oh-so-creepy tale.
Buy THE SEER'S LOVER on Amazon Here.

About the Author:

Author Kat de Falla was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she learned to roller skate, ride a banana seat bike, and love Shakespeare thanks to her high school English teacher.

Four years at the UW-Madison wasn't enough, so she returned to her beloved college town for her Doctor of Pharmacy degree and is happily employed as a retail pharmacist where she fills prescriptions and chats with her patients.

She is married to her soul mate, composer Lee de Falla and raising four kids together ala the Brady Bunch.

Cephalopod Coffeehouse Book Club: JUST THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE by Julie James

I read a lot of books at the beginning of the month (can you say procrastinate?) and was thrilled to find a post on Facebook that one of my favorite contemporary romance authors had a book on sale for $1.99...and I hadn't yet read it! As I type and schedule this post, the month is far from over, but I'm pretty sure this will still be my favorite book of the month. (and it should still be on sale if you want to check it out on AMAZON.)

 ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
(Before I continue with my Coffee House Review, I just want to mention that MY NEW BOOK IS OUT AS OF YESTERDAY! I know we aren't here to plug our own books but wanted to jump up and down a little cuz it's so fresh! Now back to the Book Review!)
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
I discovered Julie James a little over a year ago. My mom had one of her books on the coffee table, and since she'd already read it she sent it home with me. The next week I went to my local book store and bought two more Julie James paperbacks to read on vacation. I was hooked.

Her characters are smart and sexy. Intelligent and driven. And there's just enough legal drama and danger to draw me in. Her FBI series is my favorite, but this one was a pretty fun romp and I finished it in a day. So, fast-paced, fast reading, fun, smart, sexy... what more can you ask for in a contemporary romance?
Just the Sexiest Man Alive, by Julie James
Published by Berkley Sensation, October 2008

About the Book:

No woman could resist him—except the one he wanted most...

Cool, Calm, Collected...

Nothing fazes Taylor Donovan. In the courtroom she never lets the opposition see her sweat. In her personal life, she never lets any man rattle her—not even her cheating ex-fiancĂ©. So when she's assigned to coach People's "Sexiest Man Alive" for his role in his next big legal thriller, she refuses to fall for the Hollywood heartthrob's charms. Even if he is the Jason Andrews.

Confident, Famous, Irresistible...

Jason Andrews is used to having women fall at his feet. When Taylor Donovan gives him the cold shoulder, he's thrown for a loop. She's unlike any other woman he's ever met: uninterested in the limelight, seemingly immune to his advances, and shockingly capable of saying no to him. She's the perfect challenge. And the more she rejects him, the more he begins to realize she may just be his perfect match

MY TAKE:

This is a fun, fast-paced romance between a smart, driven lawyer and the self-absorbed actor she must mentor for his upcoming movie role. Neither one expects the sparks that fly between them every time they're together. The chapters show us alternating points of view between Taylor and Jason, giving a kind of he said/she said quality, because their interpretations of each situation vary so wildly. Ms. James does a great job giving voice to the different characters, including a third POV from another actor trying to steal both Jason's limelight and Taylor's heart.

There's no big suspense or action, but more an internal angst between two emotionally damaged people who have a hard time believing that they might have a chance at real love. If you're looking for a fast read that will tug at your emotions, give Julie James a try. JUST THE SEXIEST MAN ALIVE was a fun read (and on sale), but my absolute favorite of her books is A LOT LIKE LOVE. She also has a new book coming out in May - IT HAPPENED ONE WEDDING - that I can't wait to check out!

Cephalopod Coffeehouse Book Club: EMBRACE by Cherie Colyer

Greetings and welcome to the monthly meeting of the Cephalopod Coffeehouse, hosted by The Armchair Squid. It's a blog hop of book reviews, where each participant posts about the best book they've read over the last month.

This month's pick is going to be tough for me, as I spent less time than usual reading and most of my hours deep inside my editing cave. I finished the line edits for my up-and-coming romance (My Kind of Crazy, coming soon from The Wild Rose Press) I also obsessed over edits on a new romance submission and finally got that out the door last week, (and started work on another new manuscript...) and worked on (paid) edits for two authors I'm working with, one a painful memoir and one a work of women's fiction.

I've posted four reviews in February so far...but I've also started and punted a few awful books that needed serious editing and revisions. As in, I have no idea what made these author think their works were ready for publication.

Enough excuses already. Let me get on to the fun part. EMBRACE is the best book I read this month. Published by Omnific Publishing and released December 2011, it's currently available on Amazon for 99 cents (a steal!), and I'm excited to say the second book in this series was released last August... and will be downloaded from Amazon as soon as I'm done typing this!

About the Book (from Goodreads):

How far would you go to save the people you love?

Madison is familiar enough with change, and she hates everything about it. Change took her long-term boyfriend away from her. It caused one of her friends to suddenly hate her. It’s responsible for the death of a local along with a host of other mysterious happenings. But when Madison meets a hot new guy, she thinks her luck is about to improve.

Madison is instantly drawn to the handsome and intriguing Isaac Addington. She quickly realizes he’s a guy harboring a secret, but she’s willing to risk the unknown to be with him.

Her world really spins out of control, however, when her best friend becomes delusional, seeing things that aren’t there and desperately trying to escape their evil. When the doctors can’t find the answers, Madison seeks her own.

Nothing can prepare her for what she is about to discover.

Dangerous, intoxicating, and darkly romantic, Embrace is a thriller that will leave you spellbound.

MY TAKE:

First of all, the blurb doesn't do the story justice, and really doesn't give the reader any clue as to the paranormal subgenre the book falls into. I went into this blind, and had no idea what to expect. (In the end, it was less Twilight and more Beautiful Creatures, if you know your paranormal YA.)

This engaging paranormal tale of good versus evil in the contemporary world will enchant readers, and have you rooting for the main characters to figure out the truth behind all the bad things that are happening. Well written and fast paced, Madison's narration draws you into her world and drags you along for the ride as she navigates the twists and turns of a high school year that's full of changes both good and bad.

Her boyfriend moved halfway across the country, but there's a hot new guy in town who catches her eye and sends sparks shooting through her. Literally. The plot takes a twist when Madison's best friend starts acting crazy after a car accident. Madison and her friends must work to solve the mystery behind her odd behavior before it's too late.

The author does a great job unfolding the story slowly but surely, and I love her breezy writing style! If you enjoy paranormal YA romance with contemporary real-world settings, EMBRACE is the book for you!

December Cephalopod Coffeehouse Blog Hop!

Hey, there, time once again for the Coffee House Book Chat, hosted by The Armchair Squid. The last Friday of each month, you can hop around the virtual coffeehouse to read reviews of lots of different books, in many genres, lengths, styles... a little bit of everything. The idea being that each participant posts a review of "the best" book they've read (or reread) that month.

Oh, and I have to mention that because of this blog hop, I found the perfect book to give my sister for Christmas! I read the review of TALKING WITH MY MOUTH FULL by Bonnie Wolf of NPR, back in November on HUNGRY ENOUGH TO EAT SIX. Thank You! My sister loved it!

Next week I'm participating in another kind of book review, where each participant posts the top 3-5 books they've read for the whole year, either covers or short blurbs as to "why." Rachel Firasek is hosting the New Year's Reading Resolutions Blog Hop - -  Click the link on my left side bar to find out more from Rachel's blog, and maybe sign up to participate.

Now, as for the best book I've read this month, I'd have to say it was....

SAVOR, a New Adult hot paranormal romance by Kate Evangelista. It has some of the same characters as her debut YA novel, TASTE, which came out early in 2012, which is the only reason I know definitively that it's in the paranormal genre, because there's not a lot of supernatural stuff going on, except in the background. I'm participating in a blog tour for this book in early January, but I can't wait to post the review because IT WAS THAT GOOD. (I'll just report it for the tour.)

Here's the Goodreads blurb:

Mature and explicit content. Not recommended for readers below 18-years-old. Yup, you've got to be that old to read my story. Consider yourself warned.

I'm Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I'd been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band--by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn't be able to keep his hands to himself. He's gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I'm in for a long month with him around.

Crazy stuff happens and then some I can't explain. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

MY TAKE:

Remember reading books when you were younger and being totally immersed in the story and the world, not wanting to surface from the book's "reality" into the "real world"? As if the book were a drug and you were high on the written word, not able to get enough or put it down or stop yourself?

That's how I felt when I read this book.

Now, maybe I was just ripe for needing a little escapism after the current hecticness of my "real" world, but this book was like a drug, pulling me under and blurring out the world around me until there was nothing left but Dakota's words and her world. I haven't felt this way about a book in a while - not just a chapter or a scene or a climax, but the whole book. Totally sucked in.

Dakota Collins is in her final year of college, working on a degree in photography with dreams of being the best in the world. The story is told in first person POV, and from the start we hear her feistyness, her snark, and her inner drive. We also hear a touch of her insecurities about her disability - an eye patch she wears like a protective shield against letting people get too close.

On assignment for her school newspaper, she encounters Vicious, a break-out hot new rock band who're on an unscheduled break from their world tour and happen to be playing the college club the newspaper is covering. Dakota is instantly drawn to the bass player, Luka Visraya, and boldly asks for permission to take their pictures for her senior project.

In TASTE, Ms. Evangelista introduced us to the world of the Visraya family, so if you've read her prior book you know more about them and their complicated back story than she lets on in this book. While I loved TASTE, this book shows how the author has matured as a writer, and truly embraced the New Adult genre with tons of sexual tension and innuendo, and a handful of scorching hot scenes between the main characters.

Ms. Evangelista lets the story unfold organically, staying right in Dakota's head the whole time. There's no annoying backstory dump, although the reader is left wondering what caused Dakota's injury, a horror story that unfolds slowly through nightmares from which the main character awakes screaming.

The ending is totally unsatisfying, as it's a lead in to the next book and leaves EVERYTHING unresolved. Think Hunger Games book one ending, and you'll feel my pain. I know some readers aer turned off by this sort of thing, so be warned. You might want to wait to read this until book two is available so you can dive right into the next one. But it didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying this book and Dakota's story. And I totally can't wait for the next book in the series!

The November Cephalopod Coffeehouse Blog Hop!

 ~ * ~ * ~ * ~
It's the last Friday of the month - time for The Cephalopod Coffeehouse blog hop! Each month, participating blogs post reviews of the best book they've read during that month. Readers can hop between the blogs and find a host of interesting books to add to their TBR piles, and visit some fun blogs in the process.

As today is the day after Thanksgiving, I'm not sure how many people will be hopping around the blogosphere looking for book reviews - but then again, there are some great Black Friday sales going on at Amazon and Barnes and Noble... so if you're taking a break from your cyber-shopping, maybe this will give you some new ideas and inspiration!

Book Review: ETERNAL MERCURY by Elaine Pinter

ETERNAL MERCURY By Elaine Pinter
Published 2013

About the Book (from Goodreads):

Can true love survive the boundaries of death?

Eighteen-year-old Chelsee Taylor has been in love with her boyfriend, Max, since they started kindergarten together. She has no idea that high school graduation will be the last perfect day of her life. After a deadly car accident, Chelsee refuses to accept Max's death because she can still feel his presence. No one believes her and she is completely alone. Until Blake Andersen shows up. It's not just that he believes her . . . or even just that he's so understanding . . . . But why is Max's presence so strong when she's with Blake?

Eternal Mercury is two books in one. Book 1, Chelsee's Story, is bittersweet and moving, while Book 2, Blake's Story, is gritty and inspirational.

My Take:

*I won a copy of this book in an online giveaway.*

This is a YA romance with a unique twist to it, and just a dash of paranormal. I’ve read several contemporary YA books lately that begin with kind of dark premises. Like teens dying from cancer, as in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS by John Green, and A TAYLOR-MADE LIFE, by Kary Rader. This is the first YA book I’ve read that deals with car accidents, death, and what survives after death. I’ve never read a YA that deals in detail with hospitals and organ transplants that isn’t totally dystopian.

The Reviewer running the contest loved the book, so despite a slow start I kept going. And I’m glad that I did. So if you decide to pick up a copy, don’t give up after the first chapter or two. It gets way better. Tears and ripping at your heartstrings and smiling-through-the-tears-at-the-end better.

The book is broken into two parts, Part One being from Chelsee’s POV and Part Two being from Blake’s POV. There’s no head-hopping; you need to read all of her perspective and then basically start the story over from his perspective, which is totally interesting as their stories don’t even intersect much until the middle of each section – which sounds like it makes no sense, but it does. Trust me.

Chelsee’s story starts with her high school graduation and her sweet perfect life and true love with her long-time boyfriend, Max, who is also (dare I say?) perfect. He’s an athlete and all-around great guy, a track star headed to University on scholarship. Sounds a little boring to me, but I don’t read a lot of contemporary YA romance. I stick with mostly books that have paranormal twists. (Which this one does, a little bit, but in a grounded sort of way.)

A deadly car accident erases all of the perfect from Chelsee’s life, including taking Max, and leaves her feeling like an empty shell. But lying in her hospital bed, she can still feel Max’s presence. And it gets strongest when she meets Blake. Their romance progresses through the first part and ties up so nicely at the end that you can really stop there and be satisfied, but then there’s the second part and it’s almost like a whole second book that twines together with what you already know from reading the first part, which was such a cool concept that I have to applaud the author.

In Blake’s section of the book, the writing is even stronger than the first, but he starts as such an unredeeming character that I probably would’ve punted the book if I hadn’t read the first part. I really loved the second section, and the character’s attitude and arc.

If you’re looking for a tear-jerker for catharsis during the hectic holidays, I would totally recommend this book. It’s an engaging and sweet love story, a fairly fast read, and has some good messages and thought provoking parts without being preachy. All in all, a satisfying read.

Cephalopod Coffeehouse, October Book Club!

This month, I joined the Cephalopod Coffeehouse Book Club, hosted by The Armchair Squid. (Yes, yes, perfect for the mermaid author, right?) The website explains:

"The idea is simple: on the last Friday of each month, post about the best book you've finished over the past month while visiting other bloggers doing the same.  In this way, we'll all have the opportunity to share our thoughts with other enthusiastic readers."
Well, I generally read a lot - lots of ARC by new authors, beta reads, as well as any YA or MG that grabs my attention or is thrust into my hands by one of my kids. I also read, you know, adult fiction that tends toward romantic suspense, women's fiction, fantasy and "chic lit." Okay, so eclectic tastes, just warning you.

Unfortunately, I've read an awful lot of bad books this month, and several mediocre ones to boot... so this is harder than I thought it was going to be.

One of the better ARCs I read this month doesn't release until November 5th, and I promised to hold my review until then. (Hint: Check out DROWNING by Rachel Firasek on Goodreads.)

And my favorite book I read this month was the middle grade time travel WHEN YOU REACH ME by Rebecca Stead, which I already reviewed HERE.

Which leaves me with... a Contemporary Romance titled WAKING UP MARRIED by Mira Lyn Kelly.

Published December 2012 by Harlequin KISS
About the Book: (from Goodreads)

Her first thought: "Who are you?"
It's the morning after her cousin's bachelorette party in Vegas and Megan Scott wakes up with the mother of all hangovers. Even worse, she's in a stranger's penthouse having woken up with something else as well - a funny, arrogant, sexy...husband!
Up until now, finding even a boyfriend had seemed impossible - been there, got the broken heart, sworn off men for good. Then a few martinis with Carter...no, Connor Reed and she's gone from first meet to marriage in one night!
Megan wants a lawyer. But Connor's shocking bombshell?
 "I don't want a divorce."
My Take:

This is a romance, a classic romantic comedy situation, and an easy read, but the dialogue crackles, the writing sparkles, and the whole book made me smile.

I wasn't expecting much from it, as it was a Free ebook from Amazon, offered on BookBub, and I've been burned several times this month with books I couldn't even make myself finish. Life is too short.

Some readers may find this story... well... let's quote a few (negative) reviews... "cheesy," "corny," "overly predictable," "sterotyped"...  But I agree more with the reviewer who wrote "there are times when a girl needs to be reminded that it's okay to dream and have fantasies, no matter how far-fetched they are. This is probably the mother of all cheesy and corny lines ever, but whatever."

Megan is not looking for a husband, or even for love. She has a job, a life, and her own money. She doesn't need a man to save her or complete her. On a trip to Vegas for her cousin's wedding she gets a little too drunk, ends up being pushed into a date by her so-called friends and wakes up married, as the title implies, to the perfect man - hunky, adorable, rich and thoughtful. He's totally a nice guy, and she's a nice girl, and how did a Vegas wedding happen to two logical, respectably normal people?

Connor is not perfect, or the story would not have any zing to it. And the situation starts to get complicated pretty quickly, because Megan doesn't remember most of the night or the flawed logic he used to convinced her to marry him in the first place.

It's a fun, fast read if you like contemporary romance with a touch of sarcasm and comedy. And as I sit here typing this (on Thursday), I see it's still available for free on Amazon HERE.

Before you leave, take a minute to check out my HALLOWEEN TRICK-OR-TREAT BLOG HOP coming up October 30-31. The "rules" and sign up LinkyLink are HERE, and everyone is welcome, authors and readers alike! Sign up today, and don't forget to grab the badge up in the left corner of this page!

Now I'm off to see what other books have been read and recommended for October in this bloghop! Thanks to the Armchair Squid for not only organizing this hop, but for stopping by earlier this month to invite me to join! It was so much fun, I'll have to sign up for November, too!
