FRIDAY FEATURE: New Release! CARPE DEMON by J.C. McKenzie

My friend and fellow author J.C. McKenzie is celebrating the newest addition to her sizzling paranormal series that began with SHIFT HAPPENS and then BEAST COAST. Her tangled tale continues with CARPE DEMON, which I was lucky enough to beta read and know what a wonderful story it is! I love this story and these characters - the world J.C. creates is rich, vibrant and real, populated with colorful supernatural characters of every stripe and type.

If you haven't tried any of her books yet, pick up the first one today! Fans of Charlaine Harris will love J.C. McKenzie's take on shifters, vamps and demons. If you love J.C.'s stories as much as I do - let's happy dance together and grab a copy of the newest installment of Andy's snarky take on all things supernatural!

About the Book:

As an ambassador with the Supernatural Regulatory Division, Andy McNeilly is responsible for acting as the Liaison for the Vancouver Vampire horde. The problem? She detests the Vampire Master, and the SRD can’t discover the beast she keeps locked inside.

After a menacing Demon throws an important Vampire event into chaos, Andy finds herself sniffing out crime scenes to identify and locate the mystery fiend from the nether realm. What she learns chills her bones.

Threatened by the Master Vampire to deal with the Demon, Andy's complicated personal life doesn't make things easier. She's willing to risk her life and pride to keep loved ones safe. But how can she make a choice that will break one heart…and complete another?

Chatting with paranormal romance author J.C. McKenzie #TWRP #Giveaway #paranormal #romance

Today I have the talented and multi-published J.C. McKenzie visiting! She has a new paranormal romance out - THE SHUCKER'S BOUTIQUE is part of the new Lobster Cove series from The Wild Rose Press. And as much as I loved her last paranormal romance, SHIFT HAPPENS, this one is set on the coast and features a water sprite (which appeals to my mermaid-loving self! Gotta read!)

More about the book at the end of the post - first, let's chat with J.C.!

1.       Hi, J.C.! Take a minute to introduce yourself and tell us a little about the books you like to read and write.

Hi Katie! First of all, thank you very much for having me on your blog today. I’m thrilled to be here and meet your fans and friends.

I’m originally from a remote set of islands, called the Haida Gwaii, off the West Coast of Canada. I write Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. I love both these genres, both to read and to write because I like dark elements, a splash of romance and the ability to go down the “what if…” road. What if Werewolves existed? What if Vampires did? What if…

2.       With Halloween just around the corner, tell us your favorite part of this holiday season.

It used to be dressing up in some scantily clad outfit, loosely be defined as a “costume,” and go to clubs to party the night away with friends. Now, I can’t wait to take my two and a half year old son out with my husband. We chose a dinosaur outfit for him this year and he’s been practicing his roars and stomping for about three weeks now. Last year he was too young to get it and my husband was away for work. This year, we’ll get to go out as a family, and I can’t wait to watch our little man have a blast.

3.       Do you have a favorite Halloween costume or memory?

My favorite costume of my own would have to be the Little Bo Peep outfit I wore when I worked at a pub one Halloween night. I made a lot in tips that night! Enough to pay for one of my university courses!

4.       Trick or Treat?

Treat. I have an insatiable sweet tooth.

5.       If you could be any paranormal creature, what would you want to be and why?

This is a hard one. I think I’d like to be a Shifter of some sort. I wouldn’t have to drink any blood and I wouldn’t have to shift every full moon. I like the idea of transforming into an animal while retaining a piece of my humanity, to run through the dense West Coast forests as a wolf and weave around old-growth trunks to chase wild game with a pack, or scrambled up trees and stalk prey as a mountain lion, or soar the dark night skies as a hawk or falcon.

6.       What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring authors? Or what was the best advice someone gave you?

My best piece of advice is to surround yourself with supportive people and try to block out any negativity as much as possible. If you write romance or fiction with strong romantic elements, I can’t say enough good things about joining the RWA (Romance Writers of America). They have chapters in different countries and chapters for specific genres. All my interactions with the RWA have been supportive and constructive. I also suggest entering in some of their writing contests. Not only do wins give you something to beef up your query letter, but the feedback is usually very helpful as well.

7.       Where can readers find you and your books online?

About the Latest Book, THE SHUCKER'S BOUTIQUE:
After her fiancé dumps her and her beloved Aunt Jenny goes missing, Willa Eklund travels to Lobster Cove with a broken heart to search for Jenny while running her bookstore. When a mysterious man visits the Shucker's Booktique on a stormy night drenched in rain and covered in mud, Willa's heart melts under his stormy gaze. She wants Lon and the answers he may have, but he also has a secret. Can Willa trust him?
Lon Devlin is a Tempest, a water sprite who can only take a human form during stormy nights. He rides the waves, lives by the tides, and nothing can hold him down, not even a beautiful woman. When he visits his mortal friend, he discovers she's missing and her intriguing niece has taken her place. He wants Willa, but he also wants answers. What happened to Jenny?

Cephalopod Coffeehouse BOOK REVIEW: SHIFT HAPPENS, by J.C. McKenzie

Once again, it's the last Friday of the month, time for the Cephalopod Coffeehouse (what other kind would a mermaid writer participate in?) This is a monthly round-up of the best books participants have read in the last month and want to recommend to others.

I've posted a lot of book reviews this month - some of it is a cheating kind of thing, as the reviews are for books I read on vacation in May! Some were ARCs and not yet available to the public and others I just didn't get to putting on the blog until recently, as they were sitting there on my iPad and oh yeah, I forgot about them!

The book I'm going to review and recommend, however, I did read in July. In two days, despite a hectic schedule, and grabbing reading time in the parking lots of various activities the kids were involved with (you know, tennis lessons, drama rehearsals, etc., etc.) The copy I read was an ARC from the author, but the book released this month and...

I LOVED IT. Love the voice, love the action, love the sexual tension between the main characters. LOVED. Can't wait for the release of book two!

About the Book (from Amazon):
Andrea McNeilly's job as a government agent is not asking questions, but then a routine assignment turns into a botched assassination of a Master Vampire's human servant. Answers become a priority. Her search to discover the truth is riddled with obstacles, the largest being an oversized Werewolf who resembles a Norse god. Andy can't afford the distraction he offers, because if she fails, she faces eternal enslavement.

Wick's job is to monitor Andy, but he prefers more intimate activities, none of them G-Rated. His choices, however, are often not his own. His ability to help Andy is limited by his bond to the Master Vampire.

Facing many trials and challenges along her path to redemption, Andy learns the value of her freedom might be set too high.
MY TAKE:

The book starts out fast and quickly goes on from there, dragging us headlong into a future world where shifters, weres, vampires and all sorts of paranormals are officially "out" and people have learned to deal with it. Sort of. Andy McNeilly works for the government agency that polices the "supes" and takes out the baddies before things get ugly.

Things get ugly for Andy in the very first chapter.

As a shape shifter with more than one form, she is not the "normal" supe. She's never met another who can do what she does, and knows that different isn't good. She's a loner both by choice and by necessity. When her assignment goes bad and she's captured by a pack of werewolves, she's confronted by an overwhelming urge to join with the pack's alpha, Wick - despite having vowed to never trust another man ever again. Emotional conflict adds to the action and suspense, raising the stakes on everything.

The vampires aren't sparkly, but rather pure evil in Armani suits. The werewolves come in all stripes of temperament, and most shifters are defined by their chosen animals. As we go through the book with Andy (it's written in the kind of snarky first person voice I love), we experience life as a shifter and she throws in her abilities for the reader so it all feels "normal." She also discovers a few new abilities, and we're right there with her, in front row seats.

The author develops Wick's character slowly until the reader practically screams at Andy to just give in, trust him to be a good guy and do it already! Or wait, maybe that was just me screaming. Oops.

The unresolved sexual tension is palpable and keeps you turning pages at incredible speed. I loved the scenes between these two characters, and my heart went out to Andy in her conflicted desires and PTSD from her past. There was some of that past that I would've liked to see more clearly illustrated and defined, as in the conflict that sent her into the wilderness for years of recovery. But I'm hoping the author is saving more revelations for book two which is already under contract.

In short, if you enjoy paranormal with a giant side of snark, you need to grab this book and stuff it in your summer beach bag. A great read, a fun ride, and a truly enjoyable debut novel.

HER PAST DESTROYED HER HEART, CAN SHE PUT IT BACK TOGETHER IN TIME?

About the Book:

Andrea McNeilly's job as a government agent is not asking questions, but then a routine assignment turns into a botched assassination of a Master Vampire's human servant. Answers become a priority. Her search to discover the truth is riddled with obstacles, the largest being an oversized Werewolf who resembles a Norse god. Excerpt from SHIFT HAPPENS, by J.C. McKenzie:

A large black wolf trotted into the clearing to confront me. He had a white-tipped snout, white boots and mitts and would have looked cute had he not been the most intimidating Werewolf I’d ever seen. Standing tall and solid, power rolled off of his body. His eyes bore into mine. I sniffed the air. The strong Werewolf scent of rosemary swirled around me, strong and seductive, laced with sugar. A weird fuzzy sensation spread out from my chest. Whoa.

Alpha.

My other form growled low, demanding release, straining against my skin. The energy of the wolves built—layers upon layers of excitement and impatience. The air pulsated with anticipation. They could sense the imminent kill.

Let me out! My other form repeated, throwing her power against my built up walls, howling in defiance.

When the energy of the Werewolves surged, I finally released her. My wolf form flowed out fast, wiping out the feline in little more than a heartbeat. Smaller, weaker and the size of a natural wolf, a Shifter in this form was no match for a Werewolf, especially a dominant one. I had time to meet the eyes of the Alpha for only an instant before the pack leapt forward. My limbs shook. It went against every instinct ingrained within me, but I rolled onto my back—submissive.
