Book Excerpt from PORTALS by Maer Wilson

Yesterday I chatted with author Maer Wilson about her latest book, PORTALS. Today I have a special treat - an excerpt to share from the book, courtesy of the author.

Excerpt from PORTALS, by Maer Wilson, 2013

That night Parker had popped in to wake us at two in the morning to tell us our best friend, Reo, had been shot. The young ghost was distraught and panicked.

“They're on the back porch! You have to go help.”

“Where is he?” I asked groggily, as I jumped out of bed.

Thulu was instantly awake beside me, although he didn’t seem any more alert than I did.

“Back porch.” Parker enunciated each word in slight exasperation. “Go, please!”

Thulu looked at me, and I told him what Parker had said. Thulu can read lips, but even with a night light the room was too dark.

Thulu threw off the sheet and we both ran from the room. I was briefly glad we’d been wearing PJs.
Heart pounding, I took a few precious seconds to check on our three year old son, Carter. His night light showed him blissfully unaware of anything. Whatever happy dreams he was having made him smile slightly in his sleep. I sighed in relief that he wasn’t having another of his nightmares.

Downstairs, Thulu had turned on the kitchen and porch lights. In spite of the panic moments before, none of the three people on the porch seemed frantic when I joined them.

Thulu looked relieved, Reo was on the floor, but seemed stoic, and Sloane knelt beside him, brow furrowed only slightly in concentration as he dealt with the wound.

My heart rate slowed down and my own fear started to slowly dissipate. My heart gradually dropped from my throat back to its accustomed place in my chest. Still my hands were shaking, and I felt the slight chill from outside. The porch was screened in, and the late August day had been hot, but the night brought a cool breeze that made its way along my arms.

The scent of flowers from the backyard didn’t quite mask the smell of the blood that pooled on the porch floor around Reo. Sloane, his partner and an elf, had already removed Reo’s jacket and shirt. A bullet lay on the floor, and I could see the shoulder wound was already healing and closing up. In a few moments, only the blood would remain as evidence that he’d been shot.

Reo's face was white. The strain showed around his brown eyes and his handsome face had the sheen of sweat on it.  His short brown hair that was usually spiked, lay damp and flat against his head, but he gave me a shaky smile.

“Bastard ruined my favorite jacket.”

Book Review: PORTALS by Maer Wilson

PORTALS, Book 2: The Thulukan Chronicles

By Maer Wilson, Published December 2013

About the book: (from GoodReads)

For supernatural detectives Thulu and La Fi, “normal” is a relative term. La Fi is a medium, Thulu is a finder, and their usual clients are already dead.

But when their friend Reo is shot, and a group of stranded angels show up at their house for help to find a missing child, things are striking too close to home.

And now the portals that let the magical races return to Earth have started opening on their own.

With trips off-world, a kidnapped psychic and changes to their own abilities, Thulu and La Fi are hit with a lot more than they usually handle. Of course, their magical friends are there to help, but even they may not be enough to save an increasingly unstable Earth.

Portals is the sequel to Relics and is Book 2 in “The Thulukan Chronicles.”

MY TAKE:

This past spring I reviewed Maer Wilson’s debut novel, RELICS, about a supernatural detective agency, which I thoroughly enjoyed. While working on her second novel, Ms. Wilson penned two short stories set in this same world, GHOST MEMORY and UNWANTED GHOST (which I also reviewed). She’s finally released the second book in the series, PORTALS, and I received an ARC of the book in exchange for my honest review.

This coming Wednesday, December 18, Maer will be joining me here on the blog to discuss her new book and her writing process. Then on Thursday, I'll be posting a special excerpt from PORTALS.

At the start of this second full-length book about the Thulukans, we find ourselves back in San Francisco with Thulu and La Fi, just a few days after the end of Book One. This book is divided into three parts, with the second part completely set on a far-off world, and the third part returning our heroes to the familiarity of Earth and their San Francisco home.

Like the first book and the previous novelettes, all three parts of this story are told in the first person POV of La Fi Thulukan, who can see and talk with ghosts and understand and translate any and every language in the universe. She and her husband Thulu run a supernatural detective agency, catering to clients who are already dead, and now to off-world magical creatures. We follow all the old characters from RELICS, as well as meeting a few new ones.

In the first book, the portals between worlds were opened and magical creatures arrived on Earth. Things are beginning to calm down, especially now that the magical race of Light Ones, who caused the strife in Book One, have all been sent back to their home planet for healing… Except for the group that shows up on La Fi’s doorstep, looking for help in finding a lost child. Since her husband’s abilities as a “Finder” of lost objects and people is legendary (in an inter-world way) they come seeking his help. He helps them, and plunges their band of heroes, human and magical alike, into the middle of a few inter-world battles that have been going on for years. Earth – and our heroes – will never be the same again.

I enjoyed this book, basically an urban fantasy detective tale chock-full of supernatural creatures but told from a matter-of-fact point of view. La Fi is never ruffled by the appearance of new magical beings, taking almost everything in stride. The author adds many touches of the every day, normal details to ground the story, although at times I found myself impatient with details of food preparation as I wanted to get to the juicier, magical parts more quickly. There’s also no romance or sexual tension anywhere in the book, so don’t bother looking for any, and the scenes of violence are also downplayed.

An enjoyable, well-written read, though not quite as engaging as the first book in the series. There's a lot of set up going on, which makes me wonder what Ms. Wilson has in store for her readers in the next book! Looking forward to seeing what trouble La Fi and Thulu find themselves battling next!

Book Review: UNWANTED GHOST by Maer Wilson

UNWANTED GHOST: A Thulukan Chronicles Story

By Maer Wilson

Published 2013

About the book: (from GoodReads)

Thulu & La Fi have inherited an old, furnished Victorian. What they weren’t expecting was that the furnishings included a ghost.

Usually the Thulukans are happy to take on supernatural clients for their detective agency. But there’s something about Darla Redding that bothers La Fi - and with good reason. They discover that Darla has a much darker past than hinted at by her “normal” life. She’s definitely not a ghost they want haunting them. So, if they want to be rid of their unwelcome house ghost, Thulu and La Fi need to solve her murder.

“Unwanted Ghost” is the second prequel novelette to Relics in “The Thulukans Chronicles.”

MY TAKE:

It seems to be a trend recently for authors to put out novelettes or short stories about their characters in between novel releases. I recently reviewed COUNCIL COURTSHIP by Constance Phillips, which was a novelette follow-up to FAIRYPROOF, to keep the readers wanting more until the sequel is released.

This past spring I reviewed Maer Wilson’s debut novel, RELICS, about a supernatural detective agency, which I thoroughly enjoyed. While working on her second novel, Ms. Wilson has penned two short stories set in this same world. UNWANTED GHOST is the second of the novelettes, a prequel of sorts to the main story in RELICS. It’s not really a “prequel” because RELICS starts at the beginning, with La Fi as a small child, before she moves to California and meets her future husband. But this story fills in some of the gaps.

In UNWANTED GHOST, the main characters Thulu and La Fi have just recently graduated from college and set up their new business – a detective agency that specializes in solving problems for the already deceased. One of their clients has left them an old Victorian house in payment, but when the couple go to inspect their new property, they discover a ghost who refuses to leave.

La Fi decides the only way to be rid of the ghost is to help her figure out who killed her, but it’s hard to work a case when your client isn’t telling you the truth.

I enjoyed reading another story set in this world, although I didn’t feel like it furthered my understanding of the Thulukan’s world too much. The main characters acting much the same as they were in RELICS, although since the remodeling of the Victorian is discussed quite a bit in RELICS, it was interesting to get a little of the pre-remodeling history of the home.

I enjoyed this very short story, and look forward to reading Ms. Wilson’s next full-length novel, which I think is supposed to be coming out before the end of the year. Hoping for more information later this week! Stay tuned if you're a fan of the Thulukans!

Book Review: RELICS by Maer Wilson

RELICS, By Maer Wilson

Published by Crescent Moon Press, May 2013

BLURB:

When the creatures of myth and magic return to Earth, they're nothing like your mother's fairy tales.

Most of Thulu and La Fi's clients are dead. Which is perfect since their detective agency caters to the supernatural. So, a job finding relics for an ancient daemon is simple. The daemon needs the relics to keep a dangerous portal closed. His enemy, Gabriel, wants the relics to open the portal and give his people access to a new feeding ground - Earth.

Hoping to create chaos, Gabriel opens portals to other worlds and the creatures of magic return to Earth, stunning humanity with their existence. When Gabriel threatens their family, Thulu and La Fi's job becomes personal. They'll need powerful allies in the race to find the relics before Gabriel does. But maybe that's what grateful dead, magical allies and daemonic clients are for.

MY TAKE:

With this well-crafted debut novel, Maer Wilson has laid the groundwork for a great new series of detective books. This refreshing take on urban fantasy has strong elements of family, love and commitment woven throughout, making it different from many of the darker novels in the category.

RELICS is the first book of a new series about a paranormal detective agency, run by two humans with unusual powers and unusual nicknames, Thulu and La Fi.

We first meet La Fi as a child, when she was still known as Fiona. Her parents die and her unusual abilities manifest themselves – she can see, hear and talk with ghosts. She meets Thulu on the first day at her new school, and the pair become inseparable. He also has an unusual talent, for finding lost things. His family – the tight knit Thulukan clan – welcomes La Fi and her grandmother into the fold with open and loving arms. The theme of strong family bonds, love and commitment run all throughout this novel.

Fast forward to the present, where La Fi and Thulu are married and running their own successful detective agency, working to bring resolution to the dead. They have a quiet, happy life but when a case brings them in contact with a Daemon, things start to get strange. When the Daemon hires them to find some relics that will prevent global disaster the action ramps up and trust me, you’ll never think of Angels versus Daemons in the same way.

The story is told all in first person by La Fi, with lots of mundane details thrown in about the food she’s preparing and the restoration work she and Thulu have done on their home. The details keep you grounded in “reality” while all manner of extraordinary creatures and events are introduced into the tale, in the same way that Charlaine Harris’s Sookie keeps us grounded in reality with her details about clothes, television shows and her tanning efforts while vampires, werewolves and the fae battle in and around Bon Temps.

The Thulukan Agency may not be the first paranormal detective agency out there on the shelves, but it is certainly one to watch. I look forward to reading many more adventures as Thulu and La Fi expand their agency.

Meet Author Maer Wilson, and her debut novel, RELICS

I'm thrilled to have Maer Wilson as my guest today, talking about her new book RELICS and what inspires her. Her book was just released on May 1st by Crescent Moon Press - and I will post my review of the book tomorrow (fyi, LOVED it!)

So, welcome, Maer! Tell us a little bit about yourself, and about what kind of books you like to read and write.

First let me thank you for letting me visit, Katie. I’m a former stage actor and now I pass on what I know by teaching college. I live in the Southern Nevada desert with my two dogs.

I read Fantasy, Sci Fi, Horror, Mysteries and I write Urban Fantasy.

What's your favorite part of being an author?

I love getting to play in the worlds I make up. Exploring all the potential stories in those worlds is more fun than I ever could have imagined.

What’s your approach to writing? Do you plot or go with the flow?

I go with the flow. I have a general idea where I’m going to end up, but the process of getting there sometimes takes me completely by surprise. More than once I’ve been writing and think, “Wow, I didn’t know that!” It’s funny, but exciting at the same time.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

Immortality because there is just so much I would love to do and experience that one lifetime just doesn’t seem enough.

Tell us about your new release, RELICS

Relics is an Urban Fantasy that takes place in San Francisco and follows the exploits of husband and wife detectives, Thulu and La Fi. The couple’s clients are usually dead, which is fine with them since they work only with the supernatural. But their simple job to find lost relics for an ancient daemon turns into a grand adventure when the creatures of myth and magic return to Earth, confirming that humans are definitely not alone.

Okay, if you’re casting the movie of your book, who would play the main characters?

La F - Jennifer Lawrence
Thulu - Chris Hemsworth
Jones - Shemar Moore
Reo - Chace Crawford
Nana Fae - Meryl Streep

Where can readers find your books and where can you be found on the web?

Thanks, Maer, for chatting with me today! I really enjoyed your book and look forward to reading more adventures from the Thulukan Agency!

Writing Wednesday: Why do Cover Reveals?

It's Writing Wednesday and I'm doing everything except writing today... so thought I'd take a break from the madness and at least write a blog post.

Why the chaos? Many reasons, the first of which is Mexico. My husband and I had a lovely vacation last week, and my wonderful parents stayed with the kids... and now I have a ton of laundry and housework to catch up on. And work on our new addition begins soon, so need to clear out the part of the house being demolished. And it's school vacation week, time to go check out colleges with #1 son... am I complaining too much? I don't mean to complain. Sorry.

ON to today's topic.

Cover Reveals. What are they and Why do them?

Cover Reveals serve one main purpose: they "generate buzz" about an upcoming release.

On the flip side, when a cover reveal is spreading around the blogosphere or Facebook, the book usually isn't available yet. It's usually still weeks away. Or a month. So... some people think you shouldn't be putting your book out there too early, because with today's short term attention spans, people will forget that they thought your book looked cool, and forget to buy it.

But... cover reveals are about more than mere buzz. Yes, that's the promo part that's important for sales, but in a way it's also a self-affirmation for the author.

After an author has poured so much of his or her soul into writing the book in the first place, it's nerve wracking to wait to see what the cover artist will come up with and see if it *fits* your vision for your book. And cover art is the first tangible "evidence" you can show others that yes, in fact, your book is REALLY coming out soon. So when an author finally receives the proposed artwork and approves it (or in my case is head over heels in love with it) ...it's a big deal to be able to share it with friends, colleagues and the world.

And you want others to share in your joy, and help spread it to the world.

So you ask your fellow bloggers and Facebook friends to participate in "cover reveals" - sometimes highly organized for a one-day blitz, sometimes less formal and scattered over the course of a week.

And you want to include a little blurb about the book itself, so when people see your pretty cover, they can also read what the book is about.  And maybe have people add a link to the author's own website, in case anyone wants to know more. You want people to get talking about your book, and by extension you as the author.

This week, my friend Maer Wilson received her long-awaited cover art and was super excited to share it. Her book, Relics, will be released on May1st from Crescent Moon Press (2 weeks before my book makes its splash) and she received her final artwork at the beginning of this week.

I'm reading an ARC of her book right now, so I know the dagger on the cover is one of the "relics" being searched for. The blurb for her book reads like this:

Most of Thulu and La Fi's clients are dead. Which is perfect since their detective agency caters to the supernatural. So, a job finding relics for an ancient daemon should be simple.
The daemon needs the relics to keep a dangerous portal closed. His enemy, Gabriel, wants the relics to open the portal and give his people access to a new feeding ground – Earth.
Stunning humanity with their existence, portals to other worlds begin to open and the creatures of magic return to Earth.
When Gabriel threatens their family, Thulu and La Fi's search becomes personal. The couple will need powerful allies in the race to find the relics before Gabriel does. But maybe that's what grateful dead, magical allies and daemonic clients are for.
When the creatures of myth and magic return to Earth, they're nothing like your mother's fairy tales.

What do you think? Are cover reveals important for buzz generation? Or do you prefer it when a book is already available?
