Writing Wednesday: Author Tena Stetler on Writing for a Series

Today on my blog my guest is Tena Stetler, who writes paranormal romance for The Wild Rose Press. Her latest novel Mystic Maples is out this week, and is part of the Deerbourne Inn series by various authors. I read and reviewed her book, and asked her to join us to talk about being part of this (or any) series.

Good Morning Katie. Thanks so much for inviting me to your blog. Today, I’d like to talk a little about writing a series with other authors around a mutual theme and setting.

Writing is an isolating endeavor for the most part. You’ll alone in your office, writing cave or kitchen table creating a world that will whisk your readers away from their everyday life to a fantasy world.
While I enjoy building my own worlds and discovering my characters’ journey, I also thrive in the comradery of other writers sharing the collaboration of a joint series. This is the second such series I’ve been a part of, the first being two books written in the Lobster Cove Series a couple of years back. It was so much fun though I came in on the tail end of the series.

This time I was in on the ground floor and loved every minute of the changes each author brought to the series.  I’ve read every novella as they’ve been released.  The adventures take place in a small town in Vermont. The layout of the town, a few businesses and characters are already set up. You get to add new characters and business within the framework of the original setting.  Sometimes getting the details right is a challenge as the landscape of the stories are ever changing.

The Deerbourne Inn at Willow Springs, Vermont was created by editors and authors of The Wild Rose Press. We have a community loop where everyone shares ideas, tells a bit about their individual plotline, characters, and may ask permission to include other’s characters and new businesses to enrich each author’s own story.  Every new book spins a different tale using the same setting, businesses and rural area created so the reader feels at home in the setting embarking on new adventures all surrounding the Deerbourn Inn. The books run the gambit from historical and paranormal romance to mysteries and time travel.

Have you ever been a part of this type of series? What did you think? Would you do it again?

A little background so you know what every author starts with:
Deerbourne Inn, is a two-story mansion with ten guest rooms built in 1756 as a homestead and expanded and remodeled into an Inn by the Deerbourne family. After a personal tragedy Bertha Deerbourne moved and closed the Inn. When Bertha passed away, she left the Inn and its land to New York Chef Nathan Harte who had befriended her.  Nathan moves to Vermont re-opens the Deerbourne Inn and creates a cafĂ© with scrumptious culinary delights (two recipes are included in each book).
My contribution to the Deerbourne Inn series is MYSTIC MAPLES, a paranormal romance/mystery with a bit of time travel.
Earth/Fire witch Mercy Rose's insatiable curiosity always gets her in trouble. After a break-in at her Colorado flower shop, and a court battle that comes to a screeching halt in her favor, she arrives at Deerbourne Inn for a much-needed getaway. Looking for peace and quiet, she finds just the opposite in a startling handsome but mysterious man and his dog.

Silvanus Forrest's gypsy/fae heritage is a double-edged sword. The land he inherited from his parents is rumored to be enchanted. But when Mercy discovers the truth, his well-ordered life unravels, and they're catapulted into the past to right a wrong. Along the way, their lives intertwine, and they discover the true meaning of family and love. Will they change the past in time to save their future.

About the Author:

Tena Stetler is a best-selling author of award winning paranormal romance novels. She has an over-active imagination, which led to writing her first vampire romance as a tween to the chagrin of her mother and delight of her friends.
With the Rocky Mountains outside her window, she sits at her computer surrounded by a wide array of paranormal creatures, with a Navy SEAL or two mixed in telling their tales. Her books tell stories of magical kick-ass women and strong mystical males that dare to love them. Travel, adventure and a bit of mystery flourish in her books along with a few companion animals to round out the tales.

  7. I was part of the Lobster Cove series, and I enjoyed working with the other authors in telling the stories of our little town. Having a community of writers was helpful in marketing the books as well. It's nice to have a community of authors to work with.
