Monday Book Review: Dangerous Currents, by Kathryn Knight

Dangerous Currents, by Kathryn Knight
Published May 2018 by Wicked Whale Publishing

About the Book:
When a costly mistake ends Malorie Montgomery’s career, she returns to Cape Cod in search of a fresh start. But her plans for a new—and quiet—life are quickly derailed when she makes a grisly discovery in the woods, and her screams bring the one person from her past she’d hoped to avoid. Dean Slater, the ex-boyfriend who broke her heart in high school, now lives in the beachfront community that was supposed to be her haven…and he’s just as hot as he was six years ago.

With his rough background, Dean always knew he wasn’t good enough for the kind, intelligent beauty who claimed his heart, but somehow he’d believed their love was strong enough to survive anything—until the tragic night she turned her back on him when he needed her trust the most. Despite their painful history, Dean can’t resist the instinct to protect her, especially when it becomes apparent there’s a killer in their town.

Their former chemistry soon reignites, but Malorie has long accepted that her dark family secret has destined her to a life alone. And when she uncovers evidence that makes her the killer’s target, a deadly confrontation threatens to destroy any possibility of a second chance.

My Take:

Kathryn Knight writes dark tales of romantic suspense that are perfect for a cold, fall night. Her plots are twisty and her characters filled with so much inner turmoil that the pages keep turning until you can't believe you stayed up so late and yet there's that just-one-more-page feeling that keeps you going even later.

Like several of her other books, Dangerous Currents takes place in a small town on Cape Cod, where the setting almost becomes like another character in the story. I love how you can almost feel like you're right there with the characters whether walking along the sandy beach or stumbling through the conservation land forest along the shoreline.

The chemistry between Malorie and Dean is like a slow burning fire that neither one knows how to keep from spreading, despite their best efforts. They dated in high school, but a misunderstanding at prom broke them up and kept them apart for six years. Resentment, insecurities, and secrets keep them from discovering the truth about that night until it's almost too late because both of them are as stubborn as they come.

And the mystery...! I loved the way the author sets up several of the characters to be the potential killer, each one connected to Malorie in some way. When I read the chapters from the killer's viewpoint, I found myself trying on each of the characters to see which one fit best and only barely figured out the truth before Malorie's life was in danger. I love it when a twist keeps me guessing right alongside the characters!

If you're looking for a suspenseful read for a blustery fall night, check out this book, or one of Kathryn Knight's other spooky tales (Haunted Souls is still my favorite.) You won't be disappointed with any of her 5-star reads!
