Need a Hero? Never Enough Heroes - new anthology available now!

Everyone needs a hero.

Especially these days.

Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and forms. Military heroes, first responders, the teacher who helped you get to that a-ha moment in your life. They guy who steps up when no one else is there for you.

I'm excited to be part of this new collection with seven other talented authors, writing about those heroes. And their happily ever afters. Yes, it's a romance collection (of course!) filled with heat and heart and - you guessed it - heroes. Here's the blurb about the anthology and about the stories:

There are NEVER ENOUGH HEROES, and you’re sure to find yours in the pages of these semi-steamy and steamy happy-ever-after action-packed romances, from EIGHT USA TODAY, AWARD-WINNING, INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHORS.

Cops fending off stalkers and murderers, a detective on the mend and another endangered, wounded warriors who’ve risked it all to survive, and even everyday heroes who put their lives on the line in unexpected ways - every one of these stories will be sure to capture your heart.

BookBub promos, Kindle Unlimited, and Kindles on sale...

Hey there! No, this isn't really a post about my books in particular, but more like I was thinking about books in general, and buying books on sale or reading them for free on KU. Yeah, you pay Amazon for the KU membership, but did you ever think about how authors get compensated? And how small authors like myself kinda get screwed by the business model?

Yes, I've had my books available through Kindle Unlimited to find new readers. But in terms of number of page reads, I can't even begin to compete with the bestselling authors out there - yes, I get great numbers of new readers, but Amazon compensates on percentages not per pages. And I look at the page numbers and say YAY! and look at the royalties and say REALLY? That's it??

I like the idea - I really do. KU and free BookBub promos and #99cent deals help readers find new authors they like. I've found plenty of new authors using these methods. But you know what? Once I decide I love a new author - like Pippa Grant, like Claire Kingsley, like Lucy Score, like Penny Reid, like Claire Marti, like Toni Anderson, like Peggy Jaeger ... I go and BUY THEIR BOOKS at full price. Not the one I already read, but ALL THE REST. I PREORDER THEIR NEW BOOKS.

I don't KU them. I don't return them to Amazon after reading (don't get me started on that can of worms). I don't wait for the next sale.

I SUPPORT THE AUTHORS I LIKE.

Authors work hard on crafting the best stories we can, and deserve to be compensated for the angst and tears they shed over their keyboards. So I've decided to remove my books from KU. At least for now.

So I apologize if you're an avid reader and get all my books on KU. But maybe consider buying them outright, and not giving Amazon all the money.

Okay, rant over. Go find a new beach read.

Many thanks to Abigail Owen at Authors on a Dime her help with formatting - and they did a totally gorgeous job, adding little touches and flourishes. TOTALLY Recommend.

Here's a sneak peak, just to get you started. And (fair warning) I woke up today in the middle of plotting Abbie's best friend Caroline's story, the next in this trilogy. I'm hoping when all three are finished, I'll put them out as a paperback as well. But first things first.

Excerpt from BREAKING THE RULES:

Recognition jolted through Abbie like an electrical surge. Whatever she was about to say to the captain evaporated from her mind while she stared into the most gorgeous blue eyes she’d ever seen.
What was the hot blond god from the bar doing in her boss’s office?

Her first thought was that he’d tracked her down, but she quickly dismissed the idea. They hadn’t even spoken last night, something she’d regretted all the way home. She cleared her throat and was about to introduce herself when Captain Nickerson interrupted.

“Abbie, I didn’t realize you’d already met my, uh, nephew. He’s on Cape looking for a job. We were discussing the possibilities with John.”

She furrowed her brow and dragged her eyes away from the depths of the blue pools. “I didn’t know you had any nephews besides my brother, Uncle Charlie.”

Nickerson chuckled and twisted his silver watch band. “Jake’s dad is an old family friend, just like your dad and me, Abigail. When the boy needed to get out of Boston for the summer, his dad requested my help.”

Her eyes slid back over to Jake, appraising him. He looked like he was about her age, give or take a few years. Strong jawline, sculpted lips, wide shoulders, capable looking hands… she drank him in from top to bottom, every nerve ending in her body kicking into overdrive. Well-dressed and clean shaven, he certainly didn’t look like some punk kid whose father needed to call in favors to find him a job. And those eyes… she dared another glance at his face and found him looking straight at her, amusement twinkling within that sea of blue. She could happily drown in eyes like those. She wondered whether he was seeing anyone. Not that she’d had much time to date recently but for the right guy she could make time. Maybe. Her gaze slid along angular cheekbones to the scruff on his jawline… yeah, she should definitely carve out some time to get to know this guy.

She wondered what those sculpted lips would taste like, how they would feel on the sensitive skin along her neck… her cheeks blazed anew at the sudden and intimate direction of her thoughts. Nerves jangling, heart suddenly beating faster, she almost missed the rest of what Uncle Charlie was saying.

“…and at least now he’s learned his lesson about making time with the owner’s daughter.
Unfortunately, come to find out the man has unsavory connections so we all felt it would be safer for Jake to make himself scarce for a few months. Thanks for offering him a position in the kitchen, John.”

Her eyes widened as she processed the meaning behind the words. “Wait a sec, Uncle Charlie. Let me get this straight. You want to hide a playboy who can’t keep it in his pants at work… hide him from the mob… and put him on my kitchen staff?”

Captain Nickerson chuckled. “Abigail, you’re being overly dramatic. No one calls them ‘the mob’ anymore, like something out of a Godfather movie. Besides, the boy is experienced in the restaurant business. Right, Jake?”

The “boy” in question cleared his throat, looking suddenly sheepish despite his rugged good looks. “I don’t think we need to share quite so many details, Uncle Charlie. And yeah, I know my way around a kitchen.” He kept his gaze trained on her, as if willing her to see it was all some sort of misunderstanding.

A strangled noise of frustration escaped from Abbie, realizing the blond was a player. Of course he was. He probably had lots of practice smiling at women in bars and seducing them with the kind of soul-searing kisses she’d just been daydreaming about. Yeah, totally not the kind of distraction she needed this summer on top of everything else.

Writing Wednesday: Chatting with Linda Carroll-Bradd

Whew, now that I'm recovered from reading, reviewing and participating in promoting the Candy Heart Romance series (have you read SAY YES yet?) I'm getting back to my regularly scheduled blog stuff - like talking with other authors and sharing recipes and puppy antics.

...so without further ado, let me introduce Linda Carrol-Bradd, a fellow romance author and all around nice person!

Hi Linda! Tell us a little bit about yourself, including what kind of books you like to read and write.

As a young girl, I spent lots of time lying on my bed reading about fascinating characters having exciting adventures in places far away and in other time periods. In later years, I discovered and devoured romances. At a certain point, I grew cocky enough to think I could write one of these stories. Twelve years later, my first fiction sale was achieved--a confession story. Married with 4 adult children and 2 granddaughters, I now write heartwarming contemporary and historical stories with a touch of humor and a bit of sass from my home in the southern California mountains.

I write sweet to sensual contemporary and historical romance. Right now, I’m focusing more on my historical titles. As to reading tastes, I read just about anything from action/adventure to thrillers to small-town romance and always look for the uplifting ending. I stay away from horror or science fiction.

What's your favorite part of being an author?

To hear from a reader how much they enjoyed the story I created.

What's your approach to writing? Do you plot or go with the flow?

Early in my writing, I plotted down to the finest detail and sometimes I didn’t finish the novel. Then I challenged myself to write faster and shorter lengths so I would have a finished story. Now I do a fair amount of research and character backstory to get a good sense of place and the individuals’ lives before they meet. Then I start off knowing the overall plot and where the characters will end up, but sometimes the path of how they get there diverges from how I thought I’d get them there. I’m finally trusting in myself to let my characters lead.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I’d love the ability to hold a book to my temple and instantly know the contents. There are so many subjects I want to know more about but I never have enough time.

Tell us about your latest release!

My latest title, Laced By Love, released February 8th and I’m so proud that it is in the Montana Sky Kindle World created by Debra Holland in her award-winning western historical series. For this launch, 14 authors wrote stories using the settings and characters of Morgan’s Crossing and/or Sweetwater Springs in 1886 Montana Territory.

In my story, Cinnia York is a member of a traveling vaudeville troupe that the manager abandons in tiny mining town of Morgan’s Crossing, taking the performers’ wages. She sees this as a perfect time to do what she’s wanted to for years and put down roots. Nicolai Andrusha (aka Nic Andrews) is laying low until the patent for his family’s leather tanning formula is approved. He’s intrigued by the woman who gives dramatic recitations in the show. The question becomes, will he defy his father’s edict about remaining hidden or help Cinnia with her troubles?

That sounds so intriguing! Okay, you’re casting the movie version of your novel – who would you choose for the main characters? We’re talking dream cast.

Emma Stone for Cinnia because she has the great ability of being both vulnerable and feisty.

Sam Heughan (from Outlander) because of his ability to convey so much with a look and his sensitivity, although he’d have to lose the Scottish accent.

Oh My God! I would love to see that movie! Now I have to read the book! Where can readers find your book and where can they find you online?
