About my book:

Sparks fly when Sam meets Matt at a kiteboarding tournament in Mystic, Connecticut, where the sizzling connection between them is almost combustible.

Samantha Jones moved to Cape Cod at the age of ten, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Between wrangling first graders and caring for her aging grandmother, she doesn’t have time for serious relationships. Every free moment is spent on the water, and the money from the sponsorships doesn’t hurt.

Up until recently, Matthew Daniels had it all: great job, cool apartment in the heart of San Francisco, and a girlfriend he was ready to take the next step with. Now, all that’s left is the job at the up and coming kiteboard brand. He’s hoping a fresh start on the East coast – back with all of his college buddies – will be the hard reset he needs to get his life back on track. What he doesn’t anticipate is the unforgettable woman he meets in Mystic.

Matt's Mystic Connection is part of the Hot Hunks Steamy Romance series, where each story is a standalone romance by a different author, all based on a similar theme.

BookBub promos, Kindle Unlimited, and Kindles on sale...

Hey there! No, this isn't really a post about my books in particular, but more like I was thinking about books in general, and buying books on sale or reading them for free on KU. Yeah, you pay Amazon for the KU membership, but did you ever think about how authors get compensated? And how small authors like myself kinda get screwed by the business model?

Yes, I've had my books available through Kindle Unlimited to find new readers. But in terms of number of page reads, I can't even begin to compete with the bestselling authors out there - yes, I get great numbers of new readers, but Amazon compensates on percentages not per pages. And I look at the page numbers and say YAY! and look at the royalties and say REALLY? That's it??

I like the idea - I really do. KU and free BookBub promos and #99cent deals help readers find new authors they like. I've found plenty of new authors using these methods. But you know what? Once I decide I love a new author - like Pippa Grant, like Claire Kingsley, like Lucy Score, like Penny Reid, like Claire Marti, like Toni Anderson, like Peggy Jaeger ... I go and BUY THEIR BOOKS at full price. Not the one I already read, but ALL THE REST. I PREORDER THEIR NEW BOOKS.

I don't KU them. I don't return them to Amazon after reading (don't get me started on that can of worms). I don't wait for the next sale.

I SUPPORT THE AUTHORS I LIKE.

Authors work hard on crafting the best stories we can, and deserve to be compensated for the angst and tears they shed over their keyboards. So I've decided to remove my books from KU. At least for now.

So I apologize if you're an avid reader and get all my books on KU. But maybe consider buying them outright, and not giving Amazon all the money.

Okay, rant over. Go find a new beach read.

Monday Book Review: Vanilla With a Twist, by Peggy Jaeger

Vanilla with a Twist (One Scoop or Two), by Peggy Jaeger
Published May 2020 by The Wild Rose Press

About the Book:

Tandy Blakemore spends her days running her New England ice cream parlor, single-parenting her teenage son, and trying to keep her head above financial water. No easy feat when the shop's machinery is aging and her son is thinking about college. Tandy hasn't had a day off in a decade and wonders if she'll ever be able to live a worry-free life.
Engineer Deacon Withers is on an enforced vacation in the tiny seaside town of Beacher's Cove. Overworked, stressed, and lonely, he walks into Tandy's shop for a midday ice cream cone and gets embroiled in helping her fix a broken piece of equipment.
Can the budding friendship that follows lead to something everlasting?

MY TAKE:

The Wild Rose Press has a fun new series of novellas out this summer called "One Scoop or Two" - Ice Cream Themed romances! Full disclosure that I also write for this publisher and know that the call went out last fall. All are fun, beachy books set in fun, ocean or lake settings and center around ice cream shops. Peggy Jaeger writes a lot of romance for the Wild Rose Press, and answered the call with this sweet New England romance.

The setting is the small seaside town of Beacher's Cove, New Hampshire, and Vanilla with a Twist is the name of the ice cream shop along the boardwalk. Single mom Tandy Blakemore owns the shop and devises the delicious sounding ice cream flavors. She grew up on a farm in the area, and her parent's dairy supplies the fresh dairy products that help make her ice cream special. Summer tourists crowd the shop every day, keeping her way too busy to even think about any kind of social life beyond keeping her shop afloat and being able to afford a better life for her teenage son.

CEO Deacon Withers is on an enforced vacation from the company he built from the ground up. He's also been too busy for a social life, and when he strolls into the little ice cream shop his world view starts to change. An engineer by trade, his work days have become filled with paperwork and presentations - he misses getting his hands dirty with machinery. Tandy's near-antique compressors challenge the puzzle solving side of his brain, and he finds himself drawn into Tandy's world. Helping fix compressors. Bringing lunch to share on the back deck. Having a different flavor combination of her delicious ice cream every day. A lifestyle as intriguing to him as the woman who creates those delectable treats.

This is a slow moving, sweet romance with lots of heart and emotion but not a lick of heat (it might melt all the ice cream, lol.) A fun summer read as you get a great feel for the New Hampshire boardwalk scene along the shore, and characters you can believe in and root for - a staple of Ms. Jaeger's books. She specializes in strong women like Tandy, with opinions and goals and dreams...a woman you'd like to have as a friend. And for the hours you spend reading, you're immersed in her world.

I'll admit I read this back over Memorial Day weekend and am just getting to getting my reviews written after taking most of the summer off - I actually went to the beach twice so far this summer, and to the family lake house four times... which might be a record for me in the last five years since the kids got older and I started working full time again. I kind of related to both character's workaholic lifestyles, and their revelations about taking time to enjoy life hit home for me. Which doesn't excuse the tardiness of this (or posting any) review, or my ignoring this blog for so many weeks. But it goes with the story's theme so I'm sticking with that as my excuse.

As summer winds down and we're all looking for a good book to curl up in the beach chair with for a few last days soaking up rays, I recommend this story, and optimistically this series of ice cream books by various authors. At $3.99 for Kindle, they're priced cheaper than any real ice cream cones you can get in the beachfront shops around here. So why not indulge? Fewer calories and lots of satisfaction.

Monday Book Review: RASCAL by Katie McCoy

RASCAL (Rascals, Book One) by Katie McCoy
Published April 2018 by Katie McCoy Books

About the Book:
Emerson Hayes is sexy, arrogant, and has abs that would put a Hemsworth to shame. He's also opening a bar with his buddies right below my apartment. Goodbye, peace and quiet, hello sleepless nights fantasizing about my hot new landlord...

But when my stuffy workplace makes it clear I need a plus-one for our events, I have the perfect way to even the score. Emerson is A+ arm-candy... as long as I can resist taking a bite. Our arrangement is supposed to be just for show, but Emerson is like that fifth shot of tequila: tempting, intoxicating, and liable to leave me flat on my back with my panties around my ankles, begging for more.

Maybe I should stay for just one more round...

The Rascals Series:
Five guys. One bar. And a whole heap of sexy trouble...

#1 Rascal
#2 Wingman
#3 Heartbreaker
#4 Soulmate
#5 Troublemaker

My Take:
I picked up the first book in this series because it's perma-free and sounded like fun. And it is. It's a whole lot of fun - - and of course I got sucked in and bought the other four books in quick succession. All the stories are good ones, but the quality of the editing goes downhill as you go through the series (missing words, mis-spellings, wrong word choices, pronoun and character name mix-ups), so if that sort of thing bothers you you should stop after this first book.

But this first book is a great beach read...

The characters are well-developed, and the meet-cute is adorable - the pair get stuck in an ATM together. Emerson Hayes then turns out to be Alex's landlord, as well as building a bar on the first floor of her building with four of his best friends. During the course of this book, the reader gets to meet those four other hot hunks, as well as Emerson's sister and Alex's best friend. A nice collection of twenty-somethings with varying degrees of issues and problems. And a new bar to open, which brings it's own host of issues and problems.

Each story line is just different enough to keep you reading, and though all of the sex scenes are steamy and very New Adult, they start to sound similar by the last two books like maybe the author did some cut and paste action to get the last few books finished and out the door. But reading the first three stories it all seems fresh and new and well-written.

All written in first person, the chapters switch between the main guy and girl for each story, and let you know whose POV to expect with a tag at the beginning of each chapter. I appreciated that each book kept to just the two POVs, which the author did a good job of differentiating. Every personality was unique. And while you could technically read any one of these as a standalone, the overarching story moves forward with each book as the timeline progresses, so it makes for a more satisfying experience to read them in order if you're going to read them all.

Or you can stop after this first one. Or two. Honestly, they were like potato chips for me and I read them all in a week, not able to stop myself.

If you enjoy first person New Adult romance with a little angst and a whole lotta steam, you should try this book (and series) on for size. Grab a copy on AMAZON

Friday Feature: YA author Kyla Stan and FORBIDDEN TIDES - coming soon!

FORBIDDEN TIDES, by Kyla Stan
Coming April 17 2018 from Opal Moon Press

About the Book:

…Some would say I look like a mermaid, the essence of nautical beauty. I looked in the mirror and saw a monster....
... "Astrid, my name is Zander of the Deep Clan, and I am here to bring you home.”

Astrid Murphy, born with strange webbed hands and a thirst for saltwater, feels like a freak. She desires to look and feel normal, just like her family. But Astrid doesn’t realize that she’s meant to be the next ruler of the Deep Clan, a race of merpeople who are dying from pollution and overhunting. She is the only one who can save them.

Zander’s mission was to find Astrid, bring her home, and save their world. Not to fall in love with his target. Surrounded in a web of danger, a forbidden love between princess and warrior blossoms. But Zander knows they can’t focus on each other. The Deep Clan must come first.

But it’s the one enemy Astrid never expected who will tear it all down. Her father. The one person who was supposed to love and protect her, will do anything to keep her from fulfilling her destiny with Zander. Even kill.

As Astrid and Zander fight for their world, they learn the true depth of what it means to love, the power of hope, and what it means to be free.

Book Excerpt: Prologue:

I was born with webbed fingers and a love for the ocean. From a young age, I knew I was different. There was always a thirst for the sea, as if it called out to some deep instinct that I couldn’t understand. My life changed when I was only three years old…
.~.
“This here is the best girl in the world,” Finnegan Murphy bragged to his friends in his thick Irish accent. His daughter, Astrid, danced clumsily around to the song “Surfing USA” by the Beach Boys. A humid Californian night encircled the group of friends that huddled close to the roaring bonfire as they celebrated the arrival of the summer solstice. Airplanes resembled blinking comets while faraway stars flickered with life. When Astrid fell in the sand, Finnegan chuckled heartily and helped her back up. She pulled at her tight shoes that hid her webbed toes.

The smell of charred hamburgers on the grill made Finnegan’s stomach growl. Astrid’s mother, Maristella, chatted with the other women from the neighborhood. Her friends cackled from the over indulgence of alcohol.

Finnegan hollered to his wife to bring him a burger. She smacked the back of his sandy blond head playfully, and he wrapped an arm around her hips. He kissed her stomach, full of life with the promise of their first son. The group stopped and listened to the approaching roar of the waves crashing down before continuing their conversation. Astrid watched the beautifully hypnotic ocean with innocent, transfixed eyes. There weren’t any small inlets where they resided, just pure coastline leading out to the vast sea with no boundaries.

She sat on the ground and played in the sand while giving an occasional tug on her uncomfortable swimsuit bottom. She looked up again as the lion’s roar of the ocean filled her tiny ears and slammed against her heart. She turned towards her father, who was laughing at some unheard joke with a bottle of beer in hand.

“Daddy, can we go to the ocean now?”

Finnegan, still laughing, looked down at his beloved child. “Of course, my dear. As soon as everyone leaves.”

When the adults began talking again, she slowly waddled off down the shoreline. Her eyes widened as the wild waves clawed desperately at her shoes, trying to bring her into the sea. Her small body trembled with delight at the thought of swimming, but she firmly planted her feet down and refused to move. She was warned by her parents that a lot of scary monsters came out at night when the water churned so violently.

Unable to hold back her urges, she bent down and stuck her hands into the cool bliss, then quickly threw them up in the air to create a splash. She giggled at the effect and continued her silly behavior while the waves licked her hidden toes.

Astrid suddenly looked up. She was sure she heard someone call her name. Her little eyes could barely see, and she had to squint just to get a basic shape.

“Astrid… come, child.”

She was frightened, but the voice seemed familiar and comforting, like a warm blanket. From the darkness of the waves emerged a man with a thick mane of azure hair and emerald eyes. He smiled as the toddler inched her way into the sea. The tides swirled around her ankles… calves…waist…

“Astrid! Get away from the water!”

The man in the sea dove back into the abyss.

Astrid turned and saw her father running down the beach. Finnegan snatched her away from the wave’s clutches in his fiercely strong arms. He was about to take her away when she pleaded for him to say hello to the man.

“But Daddy! Look!”

Her little finger steered his gaze out to sea, where a man with pale blue skin waited patiently. Finnegan’s eyes grew wide and his grip on Astrid tightened.

“No… you shall not take her from me, you beast of the depths. Over my dead body…”
